We were actually 200/1 on the day of the 3rd round. I was about to leave for the Hawthorns that morning when my missus said she had a hunch about us winning and that I should put a tenner on us. In the excitement of driving up there I forgot to take her advice.
Needless to say she doesn't let me forget it. £2000 was a lot of dough then.

I was in that small pocket of fans behind the goal in the away end when Tonka launched that rocket

Happy days

I had a season ticket back then in the chicken run upper right at the back.
There was a couple of hundred Villa ticket holders behind me as if I remember some of our season ticket holders had to give up their seats in cup matches.
Anyway when we got the penalty I turned round to the bloke sitting behind me who'd been gobbing off all through the game and told him that's your lot chum as this bloke doesn't miss penalties.
Thank God he didn't miss.

Re: ITV 4
We were 100/1to win it at the start. Which is crazy odds looking at the players we had . It's typical west ham to be grossly underachieving in the league yet pull off the harder feat.the landlord of the railway tavern in mile end was best mates with one of my uncles and he had 50 quid on us at 100/1.

Just watching this now as you do at half 12 on a Saturday night/early hours of Sunday. We had a superb side, seeing Upton Park as it was brings back great memories, Brooking and Devo were some players

Sven... watched the final round me MATES (twins) house on canvey their dad had a fiver (a lot of money then) and got 50/1 so not sure what round he put that on... remember after the game him shoving us all in the car after and going to pick his winnings up... straight down the wimpy for us three kids with whatever we wanted while he went over the haystack (canvey) to buy everyone a beer and a cigar...

Re: ITV 4
Forlorn hope really - the consensus with our lot was that we could not beat Liverpool, so the only hope was us to get Everton and the Arsenal to beat them in a bruiser, with us getting to Wembley against the Gooners with one eye upon the Europeans

Deep joy, it panned out beautifully but we were a far better side than given credit for, even most of ours

The whole run just built a momentum of it's own and we were there to see us win - what I would pay to hop a time machine and relive the day .....

Last time that a second division side won the cup I believe?
Won't happen again

Re: ITV 4
Be interesting to see our odds to win the cup before that game.
Villa in front of us, Everton & Ipswich in the other quarter final with Liverpool & Arsenal already in the hat.

Being in the old second division in 79/80, we were underdogs in the sixth round,semi-final and final, all against first division clubs.Villa,Everton and Arsenal didn't know what hit them!

At age 20
Though he looked about 12

Had forgotten there was such whining by McNaught & Villa about such a stonewall handball
Reckoned Alvin Martin knocked his arm on to the ball

Re: ITV 4
What a pair of bollocks Ray Stewart had, too.

I know it was 'only' a penalty. But when hardened pros like Geoff Pike and Phil Parkes can't bring themselves to look, and you're the penalty-taker standing there about to take your team to the semi-final...yet never a millisecond of doubt in Tonka's mind.

Re: ITV 4
What a good side we were back then. And what a good side Villa were. No inch given by either team.

John Lyall. Absolute legend. Tactically, one of the canniest around and what an eye for a player. That's what comes from spending decades with Greenwood.

Anyone know when the semi final draw is ?

I think there will only be one goal in this game, could go either way.
